Bats are hand -winged animals; hence the name Chiroptera. Body covered with hairs. They suckle young ones. Bats spend major part of their lives in the roost environment-like caves, old deserted buildings, forts and such other places. Roosts are the sites for mating and hibernation and rearing young. Evolution of echolocation is an important factor leading to their divergence of roosting and feeding habits.
Grouped as insectivorous and frugivorous. Their larynx is powerful and insectivorous bats depend much on this for detecting food and avoiding enemies [Sonar system]. Frugivorous bats depend on vision. Bats are voracious. Morphology of stomach of bats is related to the food habits. A vampire bats consumes on an average of about 20 ml blood per day, and found in American countries
There are two types of reproduction in bats. 1] Asynchrony in the sexual activity between the male and female and is found inhabiting cold and temperate regions. 2] Synchronous in the two sexes and found mostly in tropical bats.
